Point & Figure Charting Better Investing Community Book Review Point & Figure Charting (2nd Edition) by Thomas Dorsey; Mostly Chapter 3 By Saul Seinberg 1 A Short History of P&F In the late 19 th century, Charles Dow concluded that stock prices reflected the current balance of supply and demand Dow started graphing by using actual prices in all columns (figures or figuring); later changed prices to s and s to clarify charts and show demand () and supply () more clearly Point & Figure grew out of Dow s theories and because current fundamental and technical information was not then available, P&F became popular 2 A Short History of P&F Point & Figure has varied in popularity over the years and is currently enjoying a resurgence, probably because fundamental data is untrustworthy P&F charting has been made even easier by availability of charting services and computers P&F charting is considered easier by some practitioners than other forms of TA charting (Bar and Candlestick charts) 3 1
P&F Milestones 1 point technique popularized by De Villers in 19s, used 1 box reversal and was designed for intra-day use! Classic P&F refined in later 19s by Wheelen, used a variable sized box for different price ranges and 3 box reversal Chartcraft approach (A. W. Cohen, Earl Blumenthal, John Gray and Mike Burke) refined in 1940s through early 1960s 4 P&F Milestones Chartcraft approach was updated and popularized through 1990s and beyond by Dorsey Wright & Associates Additional refinements added in 1990s by Carroll Abby and others Several new web sites (mostly non-us) now available Use of P&F growing outside the U.S. 5 P&F Characteristics P&F charts are easier to maintain than bar or candlestick charts Even manually, many P&F charts can be done by hand in a relatively short time, a chief reason for their original popularity nly high and low period prices are taken into account, the opening and closing prices are ignored 6 2
P&F Characteristics No volume consideration Unlike bar or candlestick charts, horizontal coordinate is not linearly time based Year and month are reported, but only as reference points; there is no fixed time axis as in bar and candles P&F plots are made with s and s 7 P&F Characteristics P&F chart is either on a Buy or a Sell, no undefined state or I can t decide situations!! The last chart signal, if not too stale, is reported at the top of each PnF chart in StockCharts and at DWA site Vertical column of s represent increasing demand and prices Vertical column of s represent increasing supply and decreasing prices Vertical scale can be arithmetic or logarithmic (percentage change), usually arithmetic 8 P&F Characteristics P&F uses multiple rows and columns of boxes (as on standard graph paper) Left (vertical) axis represents price Horizontal axis shows years for reference and convenience, but is not representative of time as on a bar or candlestick chart where time periods are allocated equal space 9 3
P&F Characteristics Vertical box (price) size has following ranges: From stock price of 0 to 5, each box has value of.25 From 5 to 20, each box has value of.50 From 20 to 100, each box has value of 1.00 From 102 and up, each box has value of 2.00 This box sizing scheme not used for BP or RS charts 10 P&F Characteristics s and s are not mixed in same column s are rising columns of price, s are in falling columns It takes a change of 3 boxes to cause a reversal and a move to the right hand adjacent column (filtering action) Never less than 3 s or 3 s (including the month character) in a column 11 Building A Classic P&F Chart Charting algorithm or method when do I write an, when do I write an and how many of them do I write? To start a brand new P&F chart, see how stock price did on first charting day and mark appropriate number of s or s in first column If high and low are the same, use data from next day and beyond until you can initiate the first column Just add to an existing P&F chart in accordance with the P&F algorithm 12 4
Building A Classic P&F Chart If chart is in column of s, check the daily low; did it fall by at least one box? Yes; insert appropriate number of boxes and move on to next chart, ignore high for that day No; did stock price reverse; no, move on Stock price reversed, move over one column and up one box and insert 3 s, move on 13 Building A Classic P&F Chart If chart is in column of s, check the daily high; did it rise by at least one box? Yes; insert appropriate number of boxes and move on to next chart, ignore low for that day No; did stock price reverse; no, move on Stock price reversed, move over one column and down one box and insert 3 s, move on 14 Building A Classic P&F Chart Day Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 High Low

Spread Triple Top Spread triple top signal is formed over 7 columns, rather than 5, and although one column was missed (shown in highlighted blue box), signal is still viable and is counted 22 Spread Triple Bottom Spread triple bottom signal is formed over 7 columns, rather than 5, and although one column was missed (shown in blue box), signal is still viable and is counted 23 Bullish Catapult Bullish catapult is a triple top buy signal followed by an immediate double top buy signal 24 8
Bearish Catapult Bearish catapult is a triple bottom sell signal followed by an immediate double bottom sell signal 25 Additional P&F Signals In addition to the basic double and triple top and bottom P&F signals and the catapults, there are: Bullish and Bearish Triangle patterns Shakeout patterns Long Tail Down High and Low Pole Formations Bullish and Bearish Signals Reversed 26 9
